Class 64 - 4-H & Vocational Forestry Skills Contest

Rules

  1. Register one (1) hour prior to the starting time.
  2. Contestants must have participated in a safety seminar prior to the contest date.
  3. Contestants will be disqualified for any unsafe practice or any violation of rules or any breach of good sportsmanship.
  4. Contestants must wear suitable clothing.
  5. All decisions of the judges will be final.
  6. Standard logging tools only will be used.
  7. Contest is limited to students of agriculture from Snyder, Union, Northumberland, Mifflin, and Juniata county area, except Two Man Crosscut and Two-Man log Rolling will have an adult division.
  8. A waiver of liability must be submitted to contest chairman one hour prior to the start of the events.
  9. Parental permission forms must be completed and presented to the judges prior to the start of the contest (These forms are required for the student division only, not for the adult events).
  10. Pre-registration for this event should include the 'participant's name, address, school and a listing of each event that each contestant plans to participate in. 
  11. For all two-man events the premium is paid out to each participant competing and is not split between the two participants.
  12. Contest committee has the right to make someone ineligible due to safety concerns.

Chainsaw Contest

  1. Contestants will cut two squares from a 6" cant placed on a set of bucks.
  2. All cuts must be made with the bottom of the saw bar with a downward motion.
  3. A partial cut square will not count.
  4. The shortest time will determine the winner.
  5. Time will be from the official start until the second square hits the ground and the saw engine is shut off and set on the ground. Not more than eight (8") of the cant shall be used for two (2) cuts.
  6. All saws will be provided by a dealer. Saws will be of medium size, approximately 3.5 cubic inch engines.
  7. Contestants will be given a one (1) minute period to familiarize themselves with the saw. During the one (1) minute period the contestants may start the saw engine and warm it up.
  8. The saw must be sitting on the ground to start the engine. Contestants must be standing in an upright position when starting the engine. In the event of an engine stall, the saw must be returned to the ground to be restarted.
  9. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant. Equipment shall include hard hat, ear protection, approved eye protection, chain saw chaps, gloves, and leather work boots.

Two-Man Crosscut Contest

  1. Contestants will cut two (2) squares from a six (6) inch cant placed on a set of bucks.
  2. The shortest time wi1l determine the winner.
  3. Time will be from the official start to the completion of the second cut. Not more than eight (8") of the cant may be used to make the two (2) cuts.
  4. A partial cut square will not count.
  5. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant.  Equipment shall include: hard hat, gloves, and leather work boots. 

Two-Man Log Rolling Contest

  1. Contestants will furnish their own peavies or cant hooks.
  2. No other tools, feet or hands shall be allowed to aid in rolling the log.
  3. Contestants will return the log to the starting point.
  4. The shortest time will determine the winner.
  5. A fifteen (15) second penalty will be imposed for each stake pushed over forty-five (45) degrees.
  6. Safety equipment is mandatory and must be provided by the contestant. Equipment shall include hard hat, gloves, and leather work boots.
